P1.01. From January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2035, I will not retain any personal income from my artistic practice.
P1.02. I will not seek grants, prizes, fellowships, or other competitive funding whose primary purpose is to provide financial support to artists.
P1.03. This decision is made at a time when the cost of sustaining an artistic life, particularly in Northern California, continues to rise while institutional support remains limited and increasingly competitive. I have no inherited wealth. My life and practice are funded by well-compensated wage labor in the technology industry, which has contributed to the concentration of wealth and rising cost of living in the region where I live and make art.
P1.04. During these ten years, I will make art through what I can initiate, organize, build, exchange, and sustain. If I receive a monetary award, stipend, fee, or other payment arising from my artistic practice, I will donate the full amount to nonprofit arts organizations.
P1.05. Each time I refrain from applying for competitive funding, there is one fewer applicant in that pool. I do not claim this changes the outcome for anyone else.
P1.06. I may continue to apply for residencies, exhibitions, and other opportunities that support the development and sharing of my work through space, time, exchange, or public presentation. Any monetary payment accompanying these opportunities will be subject to P1.04.
P1.07. I will not cite this protocol in applications or CVs. I will not present it as a credential. I may include it in my portfolio. I remain responsible for making my work visible.
