01.Guest Soil / 客土:
Planters, Chicago 2026Artist Book / Installation
2026
Details:

Installation: 96 × 56 in.
Book: 5.83 × 8.27 in.
English / Chinese

In the summer of 2026, I placed ten coconut-fiber planters across Chicago, each filled with store-bought soil and no seeds. An AI system I had helped design selected eight of the locations. I chose one myself and kept the last planter in my downtown studio as a control. For 37 days I was allowed to visit but not to intervene. Before each visit I recorded what I expected to find; afterward, what I found.

Some planters disappeared. In others, something grew. As I drove across the city to check on them, I found myself drawn to certain sites and reluctant to return to others. The rules were mine, but I became less sure of what bound me to them.

The records began to fill with things that had nothing to do with the planters. It was my first return to the Midwest in ten years.

Guest Soil takes its title from 客土, a construction term for soil brought in from elsewhere. This work gathers what came back from these visits, and what did not, into an artist’s book and an installation.

02.DEED OF GIFT
Installation / Tattoo
2026
Details:

Tattoo, documents, photographs
Dimensions variable
Tattoo by Shaw Lenox

I recorded the trains passing outside my studio in Chicago and had a waveform from the recording tattooed onto my left arm.

I drew up a deed offering the tattoo to the Chicago Transit Authority, attributed to the section of elevated track that produced the sound. The deed proposes two endings: if the railway stops running first, I will have the tattoo removed. If I die first, I ask that the tattooed skin be offered to the CTA.

The sound had entered my room without asking. I wrote a letter explaining that I wanted to give it back. The deed, letter, and photographs are displayed together. The tattoo remains on my arm.

03.I still do not
Installation / Durational performance
2026 - ongoing
Details:

98.4 x 59.1 in.
Existing painting, black thread
Duration undetermined

This painting has hung at the entrance of my home for seven years. I did not really like it when I bought it, and I still do not.

For this work, I set an ongoing rule for myself: whenever the thought of not liking it crosses my mind, I wrap a black thread around the painting. One thought, one black thread. This process continues until the entire painting is covered in black thread and can no longer be seen.

No one can verify whether these thoughts actually occurred except me. Toward an artwork, I can have clear preferences; toward my own desire to create an artwork, I can only choose to be honest with myself, or not.

04.Make an Offer
Photography / Installation
2026, ongoing
Details:

Six framed photographs,
two wall-mounted reading shelves,
printed texts

I often find myself fascinated by the iron gates and window grilles on homes in San Francisco. Usually installed in front of ordinary doors and windows, they provide an additional layer of security. I photographed these gates while they were still in use.

The installation presents the photographs with an invitation: “You may make an offer for any of the gates pictured here.” The gates belong to other people. I do not know their owners and have not obtained their permission to sell. If someone makes an offer, I will take it to the residents and owners and ask whether they are willing to sell. The price and terms will be negotiated with them. Payment for the gate will go directly to the owner; I will receive no money from that sale.

An offer may form in the exhibition before the person living behind the gate has considered selling it. I will bring that offer to their doorstep, along with my own wish to complete the work. What price would make someone willing to part with a gate that is still in use?

When the artwork is first sold, I will offer the households pictured an amount equal to its sale price, divided equally among them and paid from my own funds. Each household can choose the money or a letter from me apologizing for including their home in the exhibition without asking first. I have a budget for this and will agree on the final sale price privately with the collector. This payment applies only to the first sale.

House numbers will be obscured in all exhibited photographs. Records of any exchanges with residents and owners will be shared only with their consent.

05. In Time's Ruins
Video instllation, Performance
2024-2026
Details:

Original score
Spatial audio, site-specific instllation
Film by Astra Huimeng Wang

In Time's Ruins began as a film directed by Astra Huimeng Wang, which I joined as a sound artist to compose the original score. The film opens with people shooting a piano. Carrying its damaged body, they travel from a Nevada ghost town through the Arizona desert and into downtown Los Angeles.

The piano was my entry into art through classical training. In 1990s Chongqing, it also carried a family's aspirations for an ideal life and an imagined West. The funeral procession asks how we part with a familiar cultural symbol when the ideals invested in it begin to lose their hold.

Drawing from the third movement of Mahler's First Symphony, the score shifts through jazz, gospel, electronic music, and gothic rock as the landscapes change—genres that, over the course of music history, gradually displaced the cultural prominence of the classical piano.

The work was first presented in 2024 as a two-channel video installation at Make Room in Los Angeles:

Polite Infidelity (Astra Huimeng Wang’s solo exhibition,), installation view, Make Room, Los Angeles, 2024. View the full film at Make Room.
This work is intended to be experienced in person. A 10-second preview is presented here.

In 2025, the work was expanded into a six-channel spatial sound installation and live performance at Headlands Center for the Arts:

  • resonant currents, performance view, Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, 2025

  • In 2026, it was further reconfigured as a site-specific spatial video installation at Djerassi Resident Artists Program:

    06.easement 10
    Photography
    2026 - lifelong
    Details:

    Medium-format color film

An easement allows one party to use land that belongs to another. The land does not change hands. Another system is allowed to pass through and remain.

This is a lifelong photographic diary of places and arrangements that bring easement to mind. The work holds 10 places, each occupied by a photograph. Whenever I make a new photograph that I feel belongs in the series more than one already included, it takes that photograph’s place. Throughout my life, the photographs may change. The 10 places remain.

The photographs below have been replaced in the series.

    07.What I Can Confirm
    Installation / Text
    2026
    Details:

    Notarial documents, printed texts
    Dimensions variable
    Chinese / English
In 2021, while applying for permanent residency in the United States, I saw a document certifying my birth for the first time. I had been told that my birth date was altered when it was registered. I have no interest in confirming whether the recorded date is the day I was actually born. I can confirm that the document itself is authentic.

Alongside it, I place numbered statements about a name I was given, the person I became, and ten years without seeing my mother.

Black bars conceal personal information in the documents. In my statements, the same black brings the words “What I can confirm” into view.

    08.Encounters
    Video / Sound installation
    2026 – ongoing
    Details:

In collaboration with Astra Huimeng Wang
    Work in progress

Encounters is the first of three movements in an ongoing collaboration with Astra Huimeng Wang, building on our work together on In Time’s Ruins. The project is being developed toward a joint exhibition planned for 2027.

The world changes around us, but how far do those changes reach into the ways we see, hear, and feel? Encounters approaches reality as a system we inhabit and continually reproduce. As technologies, ideologies, and historical conditions shift, the work asks what patterns persist through our perceptions and actions, often without our noticing.

I contributed to Encounters as sound artist and producer.

    09.the forest sounds again
    Guided sound walk
    2025
    Details:

    Field recordings
    Spatial sound
Big Basin Redwoods State Park, CA

In 2020, a wildfire swept through Big Basin Redwoods State Park, burning nearly every structure and leaving much of the forest blackened. This guided sound walk takes place within the recovering landscape.

This project grew out of a period between 2022 and 2025 when I was deeply absorbed in sound. Through the bodily experience of listening, I began to notice how the conditions of listening shape what we feel. Looking back, I can trace some of my interest in systems to those experiences.

In-person walks are available by appointment.

    10.Untitled (Interval)
    Photography / Installation
    2026
    Details:

    Photographic prints, printed vellum
    Series of four works

In Alaska, I photographed landscapes at a distance, then placed closer views printed on translucent vellum over them. Rocks, animals, and ice appear at different scales, with one image remaining visible through another.

Getting closer adds another layer. Details emerge, but parts of the wider view become harder to see. The eye moves between the images without fully settling into either.

Weather, water, routes of access, cameras, and screens all take part in what becomes visible. My position lies somewhere among them, within the conditions that make the view possible.
